So,we’ve just been subjected to yet another White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Woo. Yes, they’re boring. Yes, they’re a tasteless exercise in self congratulation. No, there’s no reason for half of the people who attend to actually be there.
At least this year we had an alternative to the mind numbing and ridiculous parade of who’s who in the journalism world! Unless you’ve been living under a rock this year, you’ve likely heard about Samantha Bee (Full Frontal) and her ‘Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner’, which is exactly what it sounds like. An hour of comedic honesty about journalism, Donald Trump and even a The Man in the High Castle parody about what might have been if we’d elected the right person.
That’s not to say everything about the WHCD was awful. Hasan Minhaj, the foxy Daily Show correspondent, flexed his comedy roast muscles this weekend and proved himself to be a braver man than Donald Trump, who hid from scary, mean jokes while Minhaj held a mirror up to the room and the White House at the 2017 White House Correspondents’ Dinner:
